Featured Volunteers And Their Story:

Bowled Over By Skip, Irish, & Cathy!

NAMES: Skip, Irish & Cathy

Skip & Irish live in  Ocean City and are originally from Washington, DC

FAVORITE EVENT/S: Bowling and Beach Dances

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN VOLUNTEERING FOR PISOC? Many years

REASON FOR VOLUNTEERING: Our children and grandchildren are grown and we don’t like a quiet house. The grads are always active and having a lot of fun. It is great to be part of the excitement.

FAVORITE MEMORY: One grad wanted to know why the “old” people of Ocean City would take care of them like they do and treat them so nicely. “OLD!!!!!” couldn’t be talking about Skip and me. Hope they keep coming to OC. As Irish would say – C U in OC.

Cathy (Pictured on the right.) on the other hand,  is from Ocean City but originally came from New Jersey

FAVORITE EVENT/S: Bowling and the Beach Dances

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN VOLUNTEERING FOR PISOC? 14 years

REASON FOR VOLUNTEERING: As a former teacher, I enjoy talking and interacting with the grads. I was a former volunteer for the Parent Network and Kidzline – both projects of the OCDAAPC.

FAVORITE MEMORY: Not one in particular, but watching the grads bowl – we have some that struggle to get a total of 50, some really good bowlers, and some that send the ball backwards. They are really entertaining.

Our Pam

VOLUNTEER NAME: Pam Jones

RESIDENCE: DE Originally from Md and DC metro area

FAVORITE EVENT: Maui Golf

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN VOLUNTEERING FOR PLAY IT SAFE OCEAN CITY? 4 Years

REASON FOR VOLUNTEERING: I believe that it is a great program. It helps keep the grads off the streets. I have been coming back to volunteer because I feel a sense of self satisfaction.

FAVORITE MEMORY: Last week at 65th St. Slide & Ride, it was so cold with the wind blowing off the ocean. I had a jacket on and many of the grads were wearing jeans and sweatshirts. We had 3 grads that actually went down 3 times on the waterslide. They said the water was fine, it was just the air that was cold. I hope they are okay.

Some of the Original Three Volunteers

Eleanor Kelly, Jeanette Tressler and Lillian Teta

These Veteran Volunteers were among the first volunteers for the Play It Safe Ocean City and our Committee. They originally belonged to the Parent Network they were there in the early foundation of the Ocean City Drug & Alcohol Abuse Prevention Committee Inc.Favorite events are the dances, beach events such as volleyball and bowling. They believe that this is such a great project.  They are pleased that the Town of Ocean City, the business community, civic organizations and individuals support this worthwhile project not only with monetary donations but with gifts for the graduates as well.  They believe the Ocean City Drug & Alcohol Abuse Prevention Committee Inc., has met the ever increasing challenge to continue to provide more events and funding for the ever growing numbers of graduates visiting Ocean City.  It is amazing to them that more than 53,000 grads have attended the events in the past 5 years.  In the beginning, for example, only a few grads attend the windsurfing event. Eleanor has attended 11 events so far this year and Jeanette has been at bowling. We commend these ladies for their hard work and allowing us to build on it

Linda & Marian

NAME: Marian Ammerman (Shown Above On Right)

RESIDENCE: Ocean City Originally from New Jersey

FAVORITE EVENT/S: Kayak Relay Races and Pancake Eating Contest

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN VOLUNTEERING FOR Play It Safe? 5 years

REASON FOR VOLUNTEERING: I love being with the grads. They are so appreciative of fact we have the events for them and give them food, shirts, prizes and sometimes even toothbrushes. It makes me feel good.

FAVORITE MEMORY: In 2006 at the kayak relay races, a young, small grad was in his jogging suit, standing in the bay, telling everyone that would listen that his team was going to beat them all. His team was invincible - NOT!!!!

NAME: Linda Herzberg (Shown Above on Left)

RESIDENCE: Ocean City Originally from Baltimore, MD

FAVORITE EVENT/S: Kayak Relay Races

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN VOLUNTEERING FOR Play It Safe? 5 years

REASON FOR VOLUNTEERING: I have grandchildren and hope everyone would treat them like I treat the grads. Since I’m small, I even feel like a grad. I just love talking to them.

FAVORITE MEMORY: Not one in particular, but the fact that the grads are so surprised that the Town and the people of Ocean City would give them the Free events. They are always are so appreciative and thanking the volunteers - especially for the CLEAN T-Shirts.
