A Welcome
from the
Mayor of Ocean City:

Congratulations Class of 2010 and
Welcome to Ocean City!
You have passed a major milestone with your recent graduation
from high school now it is time to relax and have some fun and
where better to do that than right here in Ocean City, Maryland!
I remember very well the summer of 1967 when I, like you today,
visited Ocean City with my friends and classmates to celebrate
our graduation. It was a great time to be in Ocean City and
although the town may look just a little bit different today it
still features the same beach, boardwalk and sense of excitement
that we enjoyed back in “The Day”.
Now it is your turn to experience that new found sense of
freedom and all of the fun and excitement o f Ocean City. It is
a time to reminisce with your friends and to begin to talk about
the future as you experience days on the beach and nights out on
the boardwalk.
We encourage you to enjoy all of the great alcohol free events
offered by the Play It Safe Program while you are here
celebrating in Ocean City. This is your week to shine in the
Ocean City Sun and we hope that is a safe experience that you
will remember for a lifetime!
Sincerely,e
Rick Meehan

Simulating The Dangers Of D.U.I.
Play It Safe Is Not All Fun And Games!

Ocean City, Md.-
The mission of the
Ocean City Drug Alcohol Abuse Prevention Committee
and the Play It Safe Project is:
To
encourage high school graduates to make informed, healthy
choices while having responsible fun without the use of alcohol
and other drugs. The key
to meeting this goal is giving our graduates the information and
knowledge to make informed decisions about the dangers of drug
abuse. Every year the
Worcester County Health Department as part of the
Play It Safe project publishes and distributes over 70,000
"Passport to Fun" booklets full of information about local laws,
dangers of drug abuse, crisis counseling, ...etc.
The Elks
distribute numerous publications on the dangers of drug abuse,
steroid use, ...etc. This information is presented in print form.
To reinforce the printed message being offered at Play It
Safe events often simulators are on hand to emphasize the
consequences of making poor misinformed decisions. The
Worcester County Liquor Control Board
provides the Play It Safe project each year with their Drunk
Driving Simulator (Shown Above) to demonstrate how alcohol
effects your ability to operate a motor vehicle safely . This
video game simulation is very popular amongst grads because of
their love for playing video games anyway and the realism of the
simulation. The simulation allows grads to first drive a course
cyber sober then repeat the course cyber drunk. After using the
simulator the grads are amazed at the before/after effect of
drinking and driving under the influence. Another simulator for
grads to again emphasize the Dangers of drug Abuse and Driving
Under the Influence is the
Maryland
State Police Crash Simulator.(Shown Above MSP PFC.
Flynn and the MSP Crash Simulator) This simulator straps
in a graduate and rolls downhill creating an impact. Both
observers and the actual "Crash Test Dummy" are shocked by the violent
motion placed on the occupant at impact. Everyone is even more
amazed when they learn the speed at impact is just 5
MPH! Meanwhile, every year the
Delaware
State Police bring their own "Drunk driving
Go Kart" (Pictured Above) for graduates to experience
the way drugs and alcohol effect a persons reaction time. Here a
cone road course is setup so that the driver can attempt to
drive the course as fast as possible without hitting any cones.
This is done once regular without any delay in response time
then with a simulated delayed reaction much like those driving
under the influence would have. So between the literature, the simulators, and the
overall message provided, countless lives are saved each year
